African Applied Chemical has developed an innovative and long-lasting insect repellent yarn utilizing BiKoRepellent Fabric® Technology. This revolutionary yarn is specially engineered to store high amounts of liquid-repellent actives which are then released at a slow rate in a controlled manner. This innovative technology allows us to increase the residual effectiveness of the repellents from a few hours to the order of many months providing protection from insects for extended periods of time.

BiKoRepellent Fabric® Technology was founded from the research of malaria transmission and the challenges in eradicating this debilitating disease in Africa. Malaria is a parasitic disease that infects 200 million people worldwide every year and results in about 400 000 deaths with the greatest impact recorded in Sub-Saharan African regions (WHO, 2016).

Mosquito bites occurring outside the insect repellent treated homesteads threatens the success of eradicating malaria in Africa. Studies (Braack et al., 1994, Braack et al., 2015) have indicated that 93 % of all outdoor malaria-transmitting mosquito bites occur in the ankle and foot region.


Fabric manufactured with our insect repellent yarn has retained its repellent effect for up to 20 or for 4 months atmospheric exposure in preliminary laboratory tests. Using our BiKoRepellent Fabric® Technology and targeting the exposed ankle and foot region African Applied Chemical is dedicated to making a change in the effort to eradicate malaria.
